In recognition of his contributions to the body of knowledge, and selfless service to the growth of judiciary, The Presiding Judge, National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Lagos Judicial Division, His Lordship, Hon. Justice B. B. Kanyip has been conferred with the highest professional membership grade of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, NIALS, at the Institute 2018 Awards held at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja on Tuesday 6th Nov. 2018
The Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies is Nigeria’s Apex Institution for Research And Advanced Studies in Law. It was a brainchild of the legal academic community established in March 1979. One of the main ideas in founding the Institute was to establish it as the centre for advanced legal research for all the Nigerian universities with Faculties of Law, so that all postgraduate work could be undertaken there under the joint auspices of the most experienced and learned academic lawyers available in the country, whether indigenous or foreign.
Hon. Justice B. B. Kanyip trained as a lawyer at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, Nigeria. After a one-year National Youth Service, he took up a teaching appointment as a lecturer in the Department of Commercial Law at his alma mater in 1987 and rose to the position of Lecturer II before leaving in 1992 for the National Commission for Colleges of Education as Legal Adviser in the rank of Principal Legal Officer.
In 1995, he was appointed Senior Research Fellow by the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and rose through this appointment to the rank of Associate Research Professor of Law in 2000 when he joined the National Industrial Court of Nigeria. Hon. Justice (Prof.) Kanyip is the author of numerous journal articles in the areas of consumer law, tax law, labour law and commercial law.
Speaking at the presentation of the NIALS Fellowship Award to the eminent jurist, the Director General of the Nigerian of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Emeritus Prof. Adedeji Adekunle, stated that the process of upgrading members to Fellow is rigorous and painstaking, which is why only those who are truly deserving of the award get honoured.
Other eminent jurists who also bagged the fellowship awards are Hon. Justice Kudirat kekere-Ekun -Justice Supreme Court, Hon. Justice I. U. Bello- Chief Judge of FCT; Professor Ademola Popoola –Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile - Ife; Prof. Epiphany Azinge –former DG of Nigeria Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and Mr. Tayo Oyetibo SAN.
Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama SAN also delivered the lecture on the Role of the Bar in the Fight Against Corruption in Nigeria.
The notable events witnessed the attendance of Judges of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, led by Hon. Justice B. A. Adejumo, OFR ably represented by the Chief Registrar, Mr. Olurotimi Daudu Esq, principal officers, and staff.
